Looking to the site—
Orienting myself with the site I was surrounded by automotive themed business; carwash, autoshop, all very reminiscent of communicative architecture saying ‘Hey! We’re right here! Come over!’. So why not base my initial designs off of this concept –‘Hey! We’re right here! Come over!’
When approaching this exercise, the words of Ondie, a prideful Poughkeepsie resident, kept lingering in the back of my mind. ‘The way things used to be’ –Poughkeepsie’s past and present, but could it also be the future? How can we draw the empathetic crowd to support us? Where’s the ‘welcome’ sign? For this 3D massing exercise I looked back to an architectural era of futurism, where businesses and residentials intermingled, and architecture was based on communication. Connecting with the idea of ‘The way things used to be’ I covered the massing in old magazines, tying myself in Poughkeepsie.
